What I've just finished reading
In Darkness
by Nick Lake
In a tweet: Trapped in the Haitian quake rubble, Shorty recalls his life, forming a link with a rebel who 200 years ago forced the French out of Haiti.
Why you should read it: It looks at a country and its people that many have forgotten. It's a difficult read emotionally, but so worth it. I've included it on my list for our Grade 10s' reading programme for 2014.
Extra bit: This novel won the 2013 Michael L. Printz award and a 2013 ALA Best Fiction for Young Readers.
