When movies get kids reading

I'm having to order in another copy of Lois Lowry's The Giver because of course everyone wants to read it now that it's been made into a movie. I've always been a fan of the book-to-movie trend for this reason - and I never get disappointed by the film because I always set my expectations really low...

So what's The Giver all about then? Written in the nineties before all the 21st century dystopian hype and winning the Newbery Medal in 1994, The Giver is set in a peaceful world where everybody is assigned a role for life and choice is a thing of the past. But when Jonas turns 12 and finds himself under the tutelage of The Giver, he starts to learn about a time when there was pain and war and color and ambition and love and choice, some of which he then experiences, but can never tell anyone else about...
